about

First live album by Paris in the Spring. Recorded during three painfully warm summer days of August 2014, from the bedroom. Pretty much a semi-live album with myself playing guitars and keyboards/piano/synthesizers, but certain parts still being pre-set via computer (like drums, bass and a few other things). I did try to scale it down as much as possible to make it more unique, and certain songs were restructured/changed to work better. Some were stripped down. Setup consisted of electric guitar and amplifier, various effect controls, acoustic guitar, laptop with the program Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard, which allowed me to use my computer keyboard as a piano/keyboard/synthesizer, and with the help of certain pre-set sound designs, I was able to capture the spirit of the different songs while still playing the notes and chords myself. And also my stationary computer which had all the pre-sets.

"Maybe in 1000 Years, We'll Meet again" was completely stripped down to its core, and rebuilt to work better as an intro. Adding some drone effects to the first half and adding the other familiar elements as the song progresses, and ending with the normal keyboard pad makes the song still sound the same, but also very different.

"Dreaming of an Ethereal Landscape" is very close to its original, but I did some minor restructures to add breathing space, and time for me to jump between guitars and keys.

"Throat of the World" features an extended middle section where I just doodled around on guitar and tried silly things. I also came close to messing up the recording, because the amplifier started bugging out towards the end, and the recording actually captures the sound of me kicking the amplifier, and it starting to work again. I continued playing and decided to keep the take because of a fun mistake like that, and it gives it some charm.

"Sunset Paradise" is pretty close to its original.

"Beach Party" and "Breaking the Waves" both feature some additional guitars compared to their original versions, and were slightly reworked for easier playing.

"Forest Medley" is a medley consisting of parts from Into the Forest. Early on when making the setlist and deciding on tracks, I decided that Into the Forest would prove too big of a challenge. Considering its nature of being an orchestral album, I felt that I couldn't make live versions of the full songs, scaling them down and doing them justice. But I wanted to include something, so I came up with a little medley that included parts of the album, both on piano and guitar. "Forest Medley" features parts of "Paris in the Fall", "Pumpkin Harvest" and "Into the Forest".

"Paris in the Spring" includes an additional guitar part, and "Twin Peaks" includes some additional atmospheric creepiness towards the end.

"Paris in the Winter" is pretty close to its original.

"And the Mountains Echoed" includes an extended keyboard-opening and is very restructured compared to the studio version, mostly to compensate for the lack of strings. I didn't want to use pre-set strings because I felt in this case, it would make the song sound much more studio-like than live-like, and I wanted it to have a different feel. Still, I added some additional guitar parts and the song took on a different identity.

"Beyond the Sea" is pretty different from the studio version. The first half is pretty close, but the second half is different. No ocean or sea sounds, and I started by taking the song apart piece by piece, and then crafting it together again. Second half features new drums, new synths and a minor cover/tease of Pendulum - Voyager. The whole ending is new.

"Time Will Fade Away" is almost 4 minutes shorter than the original, and pretty trimmed down. Mostly it was the ending that took the big hit. I wanted to keep it as "live" as I could, and when taking away the strings and the choirs, I realized the ending would sound very dry if I stretched it out, so I shortened it and still kept some of the familiar sounds, only with a shorter (and not as powerful) ending.

"Paris in the Summer" is pretty close to the original, but features the "Summer Theme" on piano an additional time in the middle of the song. I wanted to keep it close to the original since it's one of my personal favorites, and that's the reason I kept the brass instruments as pre-sets, because I feel they add so much to the song, that taking them away would be a shame. Basically an exception for this song.

"Fade Into Oblivion" is very different to the original. Clocking in at over 22 minutes, it's extended to say the least. The first half features parts of "Last Morning of July" (since both songs were written over the same keyboard-pad, even if Fade is slightly darker), and the first half also includes a nod to "Cerulean Twilight" with the sample. The Oblivion-part of the song features more and longer feedback sections, and while the original song was supposedly gonna end at the 17-18 minute mark, I got so caught up with it, that I continued past that mark, and might have taken out my amplifier in the process. But at least we got some drone/noise out of it!
